Module 2
Generating Ideas Through Processes
M2 Reflection
Module two explores digital manufacturing and parametric software and uses techniques to represent the interior Spaces of models. In task A, we learned about additive and subtractive processes, cutting to explore the shape of the interior space. Through continuous trial and experience, I found that the space cut by the sphere is more open and soft. I focused on observing the distribution and radian of the sphere and considered the most suitable Angle for cutting in combination with the hard edge line of the cube. Then we further consider the relationship between space and people and the environment and consider how people use space.
The design of my space is divided into three levels, the top-level is open and integrated with the interior through circular holes. The middle floor is a more intimate space that is hollowed out inward and has only one exit to connect to the outside. The ground floor stands on the ground using the cutting shape of the sphere to create a dome-like shelter to form a relatively open space.
In the process of learning, I learned about the steps and skills of 3D printing. In the production of Waffles, I considered the thickness of the model, the connection between the top and bottom, and the distribution of the number of pieces. These are new to me, and I've learned how to use Grasshopper for the first time. I find it much more convenient, fast and flexible than creating objects in Rhino using basic modules. However, grasshopper requires stronger logical ability, analysis and judgment ability. In the early stage of the creation of this module, I kept trying different methods to change the basic cube, which caused me to spend a lot of time in the early stage. However, only through continuous attempts did I finally create a model that met my expectation. I am very satisfied with my model because it reflects all my learning processes, including the analysis of space Circulation and threshold and my thinking on 3D printing.

3D Printing

In the 3D printing study, we learned about the Basic Settings of the module and the printer. The module needs to be placed on the layout instead of hanging in the air. Replicator + and Breakaway Support are the support type we used. We can see an advance preview of the print, showing the estimated print time. From the different layers, we can see that yellow is the print base used to support the model, which will not be included in the final model.

3:00 PM
The large scale of this model, the large circular opening and curved platform create activity areas for people. The model is designed to take into account the distribution of space and how people occupy it. A gentle curve is better for sitting, talking and other static activities, while a steep slope is better for vigorous activity. Indoor fixed places are more suitable for activities with strong privacy. The overall linear flow of the model creates a movement circulation for people.
3:00 PM
This model feels more conservative, but its slanting features break the mold. Its main activity area is concentrated on the large platform above, and the model divides the space vertically, taking into account the transformation between spaces and people’s different functional needs for space.

3:00 PM
The scale of this model is smaller than that of the first two, and it fits the human scale better. People are free to move and occupy space. Instead of concentrating the Spaces together, the model tends to have independent spatial domains on each side, and the central opening is the key to connecting these spaces.

Laser Cutting

The picture above shows the research process of laser cutting. We learned that in order to save money and time we needed to put together shapes that shared one edge. In addition, we need to identify what needs to be cut and labelled by setting different levels. So the numbers and one or two edges of each shape are set to red and the parts that need to be cut are black. X Waffle and Y Waffle are on the left and right sides respectively. Putting them on the same page is convenient to observe the difference and saves cost.

Lasercut Model Renders

The waffle structure is more intuitive to reflect the support of the model, due to its special cross structure of light and shadow processing being different from a large solid. The cross-connected structure allows people to sit on it or walk on it, while the shading underneath forms a semi-open space. The hollow out private space in the middle becomes more mysterious and profound because of the waffle's characteristics.
Waffle’s structure divides vertical areas, dividing several small Spaces equally spaced on a plane that can be occupied by individual individuals. The concave part forms a shadow. Curved surfaces plan people’s movement from underground to the top. The sloping angle of the roof makes people not on the same level so that everyone can occupy their favourite Angle and orientation, while the open platform is convenient for people to carry out social activities.

9:00 AM
The Angle shown by this waffle is the rear facade of the model, and what’s interesting is that it creates an opening that shrinks inward, with a platform at the top providing shade and a small opening on the side allowing sunlight to penetrate, where people can talk. The arc of the corner is suitable for the sitting position of the human body, its space is not large and the interval between the open area is suitable for individual occupancy. The openings are connected to the other direction of the model, from which people can walk through the whole space.
